The Flower Story
Emma’s 25 plus year career in fashion and design ran alongside day dreams of someday owning her own flower shop. On entering senior management, moving her family from London to Surrey and the dramatic change in recent years to the fashion industry, Emma realised her creativity was becoming less and less part of the job she once loved and was once again drawn to nature and the wild outdoors of her childhood. One night she dreamt that she had finally opened the flower shop and called it The Potting Shed. Within a week she met Nicole, an experienced florist, through a mutual friend. They chatted through ideas over a few glasses of wine and when the space in Wickhams Yard, Limpsfield came up for rent they jumped at it.
"We saw an opportunity to bring natural, stylish, elegant & seasonal flowers to the area and beyond.
The Potting Shed opened to great acclaim on the 17th March 2023 and what began was an unexpected journey.
Following the commercial route of buying in the majority of their flowers from large offshore growers they soon realised they could not afford to offer customers the width and choice they envisaged without financial and floral waste. They turned their attention to local British growers who could offer variety and abundance at only 40 minutes away, which soon became a great selling point with customers. Realising this was an industry not fully utilising its potential, with British flower farms only producing 14% of what is sold in the UK, and excited at the idea of a business and creative process she could control from concept to execution, Emma started to dream bigger. She set up a small scale flower patch within her garden and large, dilapidated greenhouse. With the support of her husband Alex they decided to bite the bullet and embrace the challenge of taking on an acre of land, on offer from a regular customer who wanted to support what they were doing, and turn it into a flower farm.
Join Emma and her friend, the extremely talented florist Nicole, on their adventures as The Potting Shed in Limpsfield is joined by The Flower Farm in Kent @flowers_thepottingshed and @emmaphoenixflowers.
